MONUMENTS
TO
MOTHERS

Leading the Solar Energy Revolution. 100% Eco-Conscious, 100% Innovative.

VISION

Art,
Motherhood,
and Representation

The project begins with women at the highest levels of athletic achievement, Olympians and Paralympians whose lives complicate the conventional timelines of ambition, performance, and motherhood. Some brought motherhood into their competitive careers. Some postponed it while pursuing Olympic goals. Others became mothers after their athletic careers. Together, their lives expand the historical record of what female achievement can look like.

At the center of the project is the sculptural portrait.

Each athlete participates in a portrait session with her children. Photography and LiDAR scanning create a detailed three-dimensional record of the subject, which becomes the source for four distinct sculptural forms.

FOR THE ATHLETE

A personal sculptural portrait is created for the athlete and her family. It is the intimate record of the project and the woman as she is known beyond her public achievements.

FOR THE EXHIBITION

A second portrait becomes part of The Mothers, the inaugural exhibition within Monuments to Mothers. Each 20 inch sculpture is presented at eye level, creating a direct and intimate encounter between viewer and subject. Through portraiture, scale, materiality, and presence, the exhibition considers how the lives of accomplished women enter the visual record as complex subjects of cultural and artistic significance.

FOR THE CIVIC LANDSCAPE

A third portrait is developed as a bronze work of public art, created in collaboration with the athlete and ultimately situated in a community meaningful to her. The work moves from individual portrait to public memory.

FOR THE CULTURAL RECORD

The digital platform expands Monuments to Mothers into a living cultural resource for research, scholarship, exhibitions, publishing, and public discourse. The work moves from individual portraits and monuments into a broader record of mothers and their influence on society.

NUMBERS

Together, the four forms create a deliberate progression. The portrait begins with one woman and expands outward into an evolving cultural record.
